On the Fourth of July, Angie's sister's family invited us to their ranch about an hour away in Wyoming. The whole crew drove the scenic drive to the ranch and enjoyed getting to know that side of the family better. The house sat down in a valley with green grass surrounding it and trees on the hills. They served us a wonderful lunch and we enjoyed walking around the land. It had a calm quiet feel to it that felt special.
After lunch, Matt, Clare, Deb & I took the Spearfish Canyon drive and stopped at Roughneck Falls and another large water fall. It was very pretty. While walking on one of the trails, we got very close to a young buck. Matt and I really enjoyed the Camaro drive in the scenic canyon - beautiful.
We had a delicious supper at the house that evening and then several of us went to Lead for their big fireworks show. Ethan made a friend while we were waiting for the fireworks show and they had a blast climbing various large rocks there. The fireworks were great - it seems like there are always a few new versions every year.

The Drive
Matt and I have been looking forward to our first Kurz family trip and it finally arrived. We drove to Matt's family farm after Matt's night class on Tuesday night, July 2nd. The next morning we took off in Clare and Deb's Camaro for our trip to the Black Hills. Vroom Vroom. We had a blast driving the Camaro through the Nebraska countryside and into the curvy roads of the Black Hills. We caravanned with Clare and Deb, who drove in their Jeep.
We found our "cabin" in the woods just between Deadwood and Sturgis. It is the nicest "cabin" I've ever stayed in. It would be more correctly labeled a luxurious home with 4 bedrooms, 3 1/2 bathrooms, 2 living spaces, 2 decks, and an arcade game room with an air hockey table, and a hot tub. The place is amazing.
Soon the whole gang had arrived - all of Deb and Clare's decedents plus spouses. Kelly and Travis have Ethan, 3, and Ali, 1. Ethan is talking up a storm and exhibits excellent language skills. I love talking with him. Ali has a few words, loves to jabber, and performs a priceless version of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" on demand. Keith and Angie soon followed with Jack, 2, and Issac, 5 months. Jack is a little guy who also talks a lot and is the "most politely disobedient child you've ever met" according to his father. His typical response to requests asked of him is "No thanks". Issac can roll over, but is typically in the hands of mom, dad, aunts, and Grandma. He is a smiley guy. We were all hungry after a long drive to the house and Keith quickly grilled up delicious burgers. A few of us took advantage of the hot tub that evening. We all looked forward to exploring the Black Hills over the next few days.
